NEwater
NEWater is treated used water that has undergone stringent purification and treatment process using advanced dual-membrane (microfiltration and reverse osmosis) and ultraviolet technologies. NEWater could be mixed and blended with reservoir water and then undergo conventional water treatment to produce drinking water (a procedure known as Planned Indirect Potable Use or Planned IPU).

Desalinated Water
Desalination is a treatment process that removes dissolved salts from seawater. Two main processes are used for desalination of seawater, namely distillation and membrane processes. In the distillation process, a variety of methods are used to evaporate seawater, condense the vapour formed and obtain distilled water that is essentially free from salts. In the membrane process such as the reverse osmosis process, pre-treated seawater is pumped at high pressure through a semi-permeable membrane that separates the water from the dissolved salts.

Local Catchment Water
A pervasive network of drains, canals and rivers channels rain water to Singapore’s 15 reservoirs. Marina Reservoir, Singapore’s 15th reservoir and the first reservoir in the city, is formed by building the Marina Barrage across the Marina Channel. The Marina Reservoir will have the largest and most urbanized catchment at 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth of Singapore. Local water catchment area will be increased to two-thirds by 2011 when Marina, Punggol & Serangoon Reservoirs are completed.

Imported Water
Singapore has been importing water from Johor, Malaysia, under two bilateral agreements. This will expire in 2011 and 2061.
